Mathematics Curriculum: Building Strong Foundations and Future Success

At St Mary’s, we believe every child can succeed in mathematics when given the right tools and opportunities. Our curriculum is designed to develop deep understanding, confidence, and enjoyment of maths from Key Stage 2 through Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 2: Mastery with NCETM

We follow the NCETM mastery approach, which focuses on:

· Fluency: Secure knowledge of number facts and efficient calculation methods.

· Reasoning: Explaining and justifying mathematical thinking.

· Problem-Solving: Applying skills to real-life and unfamiliar contexts.

This approach ensures pupils build strong foundations and progress together, avoiding gaps in understanding.

Key Stage 3: Progression with White Rose

As pupils move into Key Stage 3, we adopt the White Rose scheme, which builds on mastery principles while introducing greater complexity. Students deepen their knowledge of algebra, geometry, and data handling, preparing them for the challenges of GCSE and beyond.

Year 8 Curriculum Goals

By the end of Year 8, students will:

· Confidently work with integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

· Solve linear equations and simplify algebraic expressions.

· Apply properties of shapes and calculate area, perimeter, and volume.

· Interpret data and understand basic probability.

· Develop reasoning skills to tackle multi-step problems and make connections across topics.

This progression ensures students are prepared for GCSE success, equipped with resilience, curiosity, and the ability to apply mathematics in real-world contexts.
